Yeah, yeah, I know..some of you are going to say that Calvin Klein has the sexiest most raunchy ads but their ads feature models who look almost too good. Too perfect. People that you would feel self conscious about being around. The Beautiful Ones. While American Apparel features models who are pretty but real looking. Kinda like the difference between Playboy and Suicide Girl models. In fact American Apparel seems like a precursor to the Suicide Girl line of more realistic everyday looking women.
I always liked the AA ads because they come so close to the line... then cross that fucker without hesitation. Like including pornstars as models in their ads (Calvin Klein would never do that) And only an outrageous personality could create such a hedonistic ad campaign. And that person is Dov Charney. Forget the Social Network, I'm surpirsed they haven't made movie about this guy. Sued multiple times for sexual harassment (none proven) and conducting his life and business as a total maverick, Charney is a like a one man circus act. One of the highlights includes him reportedly masturbating during an interview conducted by Claudine Ko for (now defunct) Jane magazine.
Here's an excerpt of the interview:
|Claudine Ko...not with Dov Charney|
"Are you going to do it again?" I ask.
"Can I?" he says, adjusting himself in his chair.
And thus begins another compulsive episode of what Dov likes to call self pleasure, during which we casually carry on our interview, discussing things like business models, hiring practices and the stupidity of focus groups.
|Dov Charney...posing in any other way would be unlike him.|
